Drop your books, devices, get outside and try new things in and around your house. We will see you back here on April 6th. Ms Boughton

Good Morning ESMS Parents and Students, Hopefully you are all doing well. Today, at almost the end of the first homeschooling week, it might be a good time to do a check in. Take some time to see how things are really going for you in this Social Distancing and Homeschooling Time. We will all keep going sadly or angrily, if we don't take the time to check in how to manage our feelings. The Calm in the Storm App is a great tool to do a "check- in". After you complete the questions, it will suggested a varied of activities, "relief", you could do to manage your current state. If you don't want to spend more time on a device or computer, simply go for a walk or grab hot chocolate or a tea, a lawn chair and a blanket and sit outside. Many of you have big yards, so why not build a bonfire and roast marshmallows. See below for more bonfire ideas. If your family needs a professional touch complete a wellness check from a Winnipeg resource- Aulneau Renewal Centre. ( see below) They are offering free "check ins" to current and new clients. Remember no matter how you are doing, fresh air and movement is a great way to regulate and feel good! Create a great day, Ms B Boredom Buster #4- Write a note, letter or make a card for an older relative or someone you know would really appreciate getting something in the mail. Hmm everyone! I am one of the believers that the heart of the home is in the kitchen. It comforts and connects our families and it is amazing that this one hobby can be shared universally. After all, everyone throughout the world must eat to survive. It really is no wonder, cooking with your children is an opportunity not to be missed. At this point, we are not rushing out the door to the next lesson, practice or game, so now is a good time! It is an opportunity; to not only learn an important life skill, but multiple lessons and skills while having fun doing it. ( see the file below to see what else they are learning) So if you all need a break from the academic side, don't retreat to your devices, instead mess up your kitchen and create a new meal plan and don't forget a special dessert. Dust off your recipe books, look for a recipe on-line or open some of the suggestions below. The mess and dishes will be there later or tomorrow and that's when they'll learn about responsibilities and cleaning up after themselves. Remember to set the table and sit down all together.
Embark on a culinary adventure! Learn new cooking techniques and create your own recipes with the Raddish Cooking Camp Challenge booklet. BOREDOM BUSTER #2 -Cook and bake It is important to stay informed, but too much time spent on-line looking at news feeds, social media accounts and notification pop- ups can add to an increase in anxiety. At this time, it is best for you to schedule a time to seek out a reliable source of news. Practice the "olden days" news format, this was a time before 24 hour news channels and the internet. We would only receive news updates during scheduled air times when we tuned in ( typically around dinner time and before bed time) If you feel the need to be up to date on the news, limit it to once a day, turn off all your notifications and don't read any news stories outside of that time. Studies have shown that it is better to do this earlier in the evening and not before bedtime. Your brain and body needs an escape and their is no FOMO, especially now during social distancing and isolation. Once a day will give you more than you need. Create a great day, Ms B Feel free to read more about this here- https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/327516 Boredom BustersBoredom Buster#1- Look ahead to summer and make an awesome summertime music playlist. Good Morning ESMS Set yourselves up to have a great day. Your teachers and parents will tell you that keeping up on your homework is really important. Equally important is your mental and physical health. This will require self motivation now that team sports and gym classes are cancelled. My challenge to you is to try to get outside EVERYDAY. Simply ride a bike, go for a walk, play in the snow, make a jump and skateboard or bundle up and soak up some sun tossing a ball with a parent or sibling in your yard. There are lots of at home exercise programs you can try too. Look in my activity section for ideas. ( especially the list that our grade 5 and 6 students suggested.) Create a great day!!!
